Tasty Lobia Kebabs: Simple and Healthy Bean Patties
Homemade Lobia Kebabs: Easy and Tasty Recipe
Lobia Kebabs, or Black Eyed Bean Patties, are delicious and nutritious vegetarian appetizers or snacks.
Recipe to make these flavorful kebabs at home:
Ingredients
- 1 cup Black Eyed Beans (Lobia), soaked overnight
- 1 medium Onion, finely chopped
- 2-3 Green Chilies, finely chopped
- 1-inch Ginger, grated
- 3-4 Garlic Cloves, minced
- 1/2 cup Fresh Coriander Leaves, finely chopped
- 1 tsp Cumin Powder
- 1 tsp Coriander Powder
- 1 tsp Garam Masala
- 1/2 tsp Red Chili Powder
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder
- 1 tsp Amchur (Dry Mango Powder)
- Salt to taste
- 2-3 tbsp Gram Flour (Besan) or Bread Crumbs (for binding)
- Oil for shallow frying
Instructions
Prepare the Beans:
- Drain the soaked black-eyed beans and rinse them well.
- Boil the beans in fresh water until they are soft and tender. This usually takes about 15-20 minutes. Alternatively, you can pressure cook them for 2-3 whistles.
- Drain the cooked beans and let them cool.
Mash the Beans:
- Once cooled, transfer the beans to a large mixing bowl.
- Use a potato masher or the back of a spoon to mash the beans into a coarse paste. It should be chunky and not completely smooth.
Mix the Ingredients:
- Add the finely chopped onion, green chilies, ginger, garlic, and fresh coriander leaves to the mashed beans.
- Mix in the cumin powder, coriander powder, garam masala, red chili powder, turmeric powder, amchur, and salt.
- Add the gram flour or bread crumbs to the mixture. This helps in binding the kebabs. Mix everything well until all ingredients are evenly combined.
Shape the Kebabs:
- Grease your hands with a little oil to prevent the mixture from sticking.
- Take a small portion of the mixture and shape it into a flat, round patty. Repeat with the remaining mixture to form more patties.
Fry the Kebabs:
- Heat oil in a non-stick frying pan over medium heat. The oil should be enough for shallow frying.
- Place the patties in the pan and fry until golden brown and crispy on both sides. This usually takes about 3-4 minutes per side.
- Avoid overcrowding the pan; fry in batches if necessary.
Drain Excess Oil:
- Remove the kebabs from the pan and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
Serving
Serve the Lobia Kebabs hot with mint chutney, tamarind chutney, or yogurt dip. Garnish with onion rings and lemon wedges for an extra touch.
Tips
- Ensure the black-eyed beans are thoroughly cooked and soft before mashing to get a smooth mixture.
- Adjust the level of spices according to your taste preference.
- You can also add finely chopped nuts or raisins for added texture and flavor.
Enjoy your delicious and healthy Lobia Kebabs as a perfect appetizer or snack!
